How To Gain A Customer Base From Mailing Lists? by Lil Waldner Building up email address lists of potential and real customers is important in order to convert traffic into sales. People who are interested in the issue of a website can be informed regularily about special offers and news. A good email address list of buying customers is a good tool for the customer relationship management. Different sources to catch mailing lists: 1. A smart and correct way to begin Opt in email lists or safelists are a smart and correct way to build up an email address list from scratch with potential customers. These lists are well maintained and updated. The people on the address list have approved to receive promotional mailings. Targeted email lists are available. The email services do the mailings through their systems. The merchant does not need a software and bandwith for an email server. Everything is hassle free. The response by the audience is affirmative, if the mailings are appealing. 2. Bulk Email Lists New website owners often try to generate traffic quickly with the use of bulk email lists. Email lists with up to millions of email addresses are offered. The response to such mailings in bulk is often low. Some addresses are outdated, some mailings are filtered out by Anti-SPAM-Systems, some people get upset by the mailings. Merchants take the related risks, if they expect that about 200 of 100,000 addressed people buy a lot. 3. A sly trick Some merchants collect email addresses about other merchants in the internet. They check the email addresses of classified ads or other kind of ads. There are names and email addresses on all classified ads. This merchants send their offers to the other merchants in the hope to find an interested audience in them. I get this kind of mailings almost daily. These people, however, display their email addresses to me and they offer me a chance to re-invite them to my website or special affiliate program. 4. Clever and appreciated Web sites can offer the interested audience to sign up for free services, e.g. a newsletter about tips or specials, tutorials, ebooks, games. The people who sign up are usually interested in this kind of services and show some sympathy to the website. Most of the people do not buy after the first visit of a website, but a lot of people appreciate it to receive attention. Some of them buy sooner or later from a website, if the website owner can keep in touch with them by regular mailings. 5. Customer relationship management Email address lists that have been gathered from potential or buying customers have to be maintained carefully. The audience should be provided with regular mailings about recent news and special offers. A broad base of buying customers is a valuable asset of every business. It is an old wisdom: It's easier to stay with loyal customers than to gain new customers. About the Author Lil Waldner is a business economist. She is experienced in project management and marketing. But you must be careful about the email lists you choose to buy. The fastest way to kill a product offer through email is to spam your potential customers. If you don't want to be accused of spamming your recipients, you need to use only opt-in email lists. Opt-in lists are targeted email lists that offer you a politically correct way to reach your target audience. Another reason to use an opt-in list is your Internet Service Provider or ISP thinks you are sending spam, they will surely cancel your account and your access to the Net. Opt-in email is more extensive than using unsolicited bulk email but is far more effective and is quickly becoming an effective way to sell on the Internet. The response rate from marketing to the proper opt-in email list can be five to ten times higher than a banner ad. Here are some rules to keep in mind when selling through email. * Identify yourself. Let your prospective customer know who you are right up front. If you've rented an opt-in list, remind them that they opted in. Include a sentence reminding them why they're receiving your email. * Keep it short, real short, less than one page. Email is most effective when it's short and simple. After you introduce yourself, give a brief description of your offer. Within the offer, give them a link to click or refer them to the URL of the buying page. * Provide value for their time. Make it a compelling or a limited-time offer. Offer something that they couldn't already buy from your site. Perhaps an exclusive offer only made through your email. * Be ready to apologize. People's memory can be short and they can forget they opted into the list, or their tastes or needs might have changed. So, if they complain or ask to be removed from your list, respond quickly and politely. * Make it easy to unsubscribe. Place your unsubscribe instructions both at the beginning and at the end of your email message. Don't make them call a phone number to unsubscribe. The unsubscribe process should be both fast and simple. Your Information Should Be Sacred by Pat Marcello If you're new to online marketing, you may be unaware of a one important fact--everyone is out to get your email address.Yep. It's true. You've heard, "The Money Is In the List," right? Well, how do you think people get lists? But be careful. Some people are greedy and get your email address again and again and keep sending those infernal emails about this, that, or the other thing, day after day, to every email account you own. It really gets obnoxious! As one who would love to have your email address, too, I now have to tell you how you undoubtedly became part of a list--Lead Capture. If you've never heard the term, you may have heard "squeeze page," and most of these pages work the same way. A lead capture or squeeze page will have some text and graphics and one thing is always the same--the box for your name and email. Some are more elaborate and ask for your home address, your telephone number, and so on. Any lead capture page should explain why you might want to relinquish your information and that the person/company collecting the information promises not to share it with anyone for any reason. If you're going to give your information up, these factors are requirements, not options! When you're surfing and see a page with just a "Please Sign Up Here" and the boxes, with no information regarding the site's privacy policy or what you're signing up for--BEWARE! You can be put on oh so many lists! Mailing lists, calling lists, and who knows what other kinds of lists. And don't forget, if you're someone who hates telemarketing calls, that by giving the information, you've rescinded your Do Not Call status in the U.S. from that particular marketer, and if the company sells or rents your phone number, well... you may have given up a lot more. It's OK to give your information if you a) know what you're getting in return, b) know that the offer comes from a reliable source, and c) you know what will happen to your information once you provide it. The watchword online is prudence.! About the Author Pat Marcello never abuses her list members at OVMarketing One-Tip News, and always lets people know she will not divulge their information to anyone for any reason, period.
