REIKI TODAY Reiki is an ancient healing art that has recently been re-discovered in Japan. With the resurrection of Reiki in this age of mass and almost instantaneous communication, word of its power is quickly gaining the attention of the mainstream world. The mode of transmission of Reiki energy from a Reiki practitioner to a recipient was originally believed, by those interested in this art, to be limited by physical proximity. The Reiki practitioner would place their hands gently on, or a few inches above the Reiki recipient's body. Upon further exploration of the potential of Reiki, "sending" the energy to the recipient or situation has proven to be just as beneficial as Reiki "hands-on" sessions. In fact, those who are too busy to carve out the time for a Reiki session can now go about their business while receiving the energy. Reiki Masters, such as myself, have directed Reiki energy to boardrooms, pets, surgical procedures, courtrooms, business offices, plants and even sporting events. Reiki distance energy healing has become a viable option for those who would rather not have a "hands-on" session, are home bound, or simply don't have the time for a session. After experimenting with this mode of transmission, I was utterly amazed at the results. One year of daily remote sessions to a seriously disabled arthritic friend ended up almost eliminating the crippling condition. Today this friend is not only employed, but is doing work that requires physical movement and stamina. As the power of Reiki spreads, individuals seeking sessions now have more options in incorporating it into their schedules and lifestyles.

ORIGIN OF REIKI ENERGY The origin of this powerful healing energy is believed to be divine. It is the same energy that has been channeled by all the historically famous healing giants. Regardless of its source, or why it works, the results are always positive and directed toward the best outcomes. There is no danger of misuse or abuse. Reiki energy cannot be forced. An individual simply will not take in what it does not want. When Reiki energy is accepted, the highest good of all prevails. The recipient of Reiki need not study, understand or believe in its power and beauty. In fact, the recipient need not be awake while receiving the energy. Reiki energy always delivers the highest good. Considering the source, how could it do anything else? The only prerequisite is that the recipient, on a soul level, really wants to heal. The positive effects of Reiki energy could be quick and dramatic, or, take time to be noticed. The results are unpredictable and pleasantly surprising. One simply needs to trust in the intelligent nature of the source. An acute power of observation would be handy, only to affirm it's often subtle life changes and effects.

FOREIGN NAME - UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED ENERGY One need not be mislead or intimidated by Reiki's foreign name. Reiki is called such because, as it happened, this old system of prayer and healing was again returned to mankind via a Japanese man called Dr. Usui. The name "Reiki" is Japanese because that was Dr. Usui's native language. This healing art was known and utilized long before it's resurgence under a Japanese name. The divine is not concerned with nationality. When utilizing Reiki energy, one is merely tapping into the magnanimous love of the divine (God, life force, universe, Christ force, etc). Famous ancient healers such as Jesus used the exact same source of energy as is used by "Reiki." Jesus once said that all he can do can be done by us and even more. The key ingredient is trust. As a Reiki Master, I have learned to trust in the goodness and intelligence of this energy.

APPLICATIONS & LIMITATIONS The beauty of this divine love is that it does not discriminate between believers and skeptics. Its power has been utilized to positively impact a multitude of people and situations from NBA basketball games (calming potentially volatile players) to conservative institutions such as Wall Street. The healing power of Reiki can be directed toward individuals, pets, plants, living/working spaces, businesses, situations and even future events. This loving energy now called "Reiki" is incapable of hurting other individuals for personal gain. Extremely specific requests can be very limiting. One needs to reflect on the general desired outcome behind the request. An example would be to ask for the "growth of one's business." It would be more productive to ask what you would want from its growth. It may be better to ask for "financial freedom." This broader approach frees up the hands of the divine to send you your best outcome(s). Reiki always works toward the best outcomes. When my clients present me with a request, I will ask that the energy be utilized for the "highest and best" of the individual or situation. It is good to remember that one is only limited by their imagination and purity of your intent.

REIKI HEALING FACILITATOR - TRAINING AND LEVELS An individual can receive Reiki from what is known as a "Reiki practitioner." The practitioner can lightly place their hands on various parts of the recipient's clothed body or, the practitioner can remotely send the Reiki energy. In both distance and hands-on healing, the recipient's own body's innate wisdom actually draws the energy through the practitioner and directs it to it's highest good. The healing occurs on a soul determined priority basis. Healing can be physical, emotional or spiritual. I always find it interesting and amazing to witness how the healing unfolds. The practitioner is not responsible for making healing decisions for the recipient. The recipient is the actual healer. The Reiki practitioner merely acts as a conduit of the energy thus serving as a "healing facilitator."

Those who believe in a supreme intelligence can elect to believe the source to be divine, thus creating a cooperative union between one's inner knowing (the soul), and the source (God). My personal evaluation of its magnificent power places God/Universe/Source as the ultimate source of this energy, however, one's personal beliefs or lack thereof do not hinder nor enhance the results of a Reiki treatment.

Going through a special intensive training certifies a Reiki practitioner. The training is conducted by a Reiki Master/Teacher and includes a sacred ceremony called an "attunement." Only after being attuned, can one channel the Reiki energy.

Other healing modalities manipulate "Ki" or life energy. Examples include the martial arts, acupuncture, therapeutic touch, and other forms of "energy work." Reiki is different in that it is extremely focused and need not be guided by a special effort or entering an altered state. The energy destination is divinely directed.

There are different levels and abilities of a Reiki practitioner. To advance from one level to another, a perspective Reiki practitioner must receive an "attunement". Generally, a person cannot channel Reiki energy without this ceremony. The first level is Reiki I. A Reiki I practitioner is empowered to channel Reiki energy by physically touching an individual with their hands. There must be physical proximity. A Reiki II practitioner is able to "send" the Reiki energy as well as giving hands-on treatments. Again, a special attunement is required to move to this advanced level. The Reiki II practitioner can direct Reiki energy to an individual, plant or animal or situation. When feasible, permission is required. In cases when granting permission is not possible, the Reiki practitioner can seek soul-approval. The next level is Reiki III. A Reiki III practitioner is known as a Reiki Master. In addition to the abilities of Reiki I and II, Reiki III practitioners are empowered with the ability to give attunements. A great deal of training by the master occurs prior to, and then after, the attunement.

In Japan, in the early 1920s, Mikao Usui developed Reiki-ho (Reiki method) as "the way to make mind and body healthy on the basis of Universal Reiki".* Reiki is the vibration of love and harmony of universal energy. Reiki-ho is not only a wonderful "healing technique", but also "an effective way to raise spirituality and to create a positive life". Reiki brings all within and around the body into balance, surrounding with harmony, and helps in personal relationships. It enhances mental clarity in the workplace. I have had students say to me, "Reiki is making such a positive difference in my life".

The Reiki (ray - key) practitioner's body is the instrument through which universal energy flows drawn by the magnet of any imbalance in the mind, body, or spirit of the person, animal, or plant receiving. Neither Reiki practitioners nor teachers can direct the flow of Reiki.

No worry has to be given to harm coming from Reiki. It will only flow when needed, and will never give a negative reaction with any prescribed medication, or require a person to drink extra water, as with massage.

Clients often speak of feeling a gentle soothing heat from the Reiki practitioner's hands going deep within, but warmth is only one sensation that may or may not be experienced. The stresses of everyday life can rob our bodies of vital energies and Reiki replenishes those energies. Reiki will flow to any person even if he or she does not believe in Reiki. Reiki travels to where the need exists, and touches all the cells that it passes through in a positive way. It goes to the core of the illness, within the nucleus of the cells, to begin healing. It does not simply mask the symptoms of an illness.

Reiki is not a substitute for any professional medical care, but is used in balance with medical or psychological care and expedites the recovery process. Reiki practitioners who are also medical professionals, in hospitals initiate Reiki while doing conventional medical practice or therapy treatment. Reiki speeds recovery in all types of trauma. More and more hospitals welcome Reiki practitioners coming in to assist in the healing process of those patients that have requested it. Reiki can help those people in nursing homes and in assisted living facilities to adjust to his or her new environment.

It is commonly believed it was on Mt. Kurama where Mikao Usui meditated and connected with the vibration of universal energy he named Reiki in March 1922, some records say 1921 but Reiki did not exist anywhere in the world prior to Mikao Usui's second or true awakening. Over the centuries, there have been countless forms of hands-on-healing. Using universal energy to heal has perhaps been happening for over 40,000 years, and there are other energy systems used today for healing. In 1923, Usui-sensei created the society, which still exists in Japan today, Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. Reiki is not connected to any religion. It is a spiritual practice, which complements all.

Mikao Usui was born August 15, 1865, left home in his youth, traveled, married and had two children, and held numerous jobs. Hiroshi Doi said he was called a person of free will. Usui-sensei passed away in his sleep after a long day of giving treatments, March 9th, 15th year of Taisho (A.D. 1926). *** His secular name is Usui Mikao and his Buddhist posthumous name is Reizan-in Shuyo Tenshin Koji. A Buddhist priest of the temple where the deceased use to belong customarily gives a person upon death, a Buddhist posthumous name. His Buddhist name is typical of the Japanese Buddhism sect Jodo shu. All those that knew him spoke of him as a very intelligent man, but there are no records of him ever receiving a doctorate or who decided "Dr." should be placed in front of his name. I was taught Sensei is a term of respect for an honorable teacher, so I am content to use that. Legends surrounding Reiki and created myths about Usui-Sensei are plentiful, but the natural healing wonderment of the energy Mikao Usui named Reiki overshadows all.

Anyone can learn to allow Reiki to flow through him or her from a person who has satisfactorily completed the highest level of the style he or she chose to practice in accordance with the Usui Reiki Ryoho tradition. The highest level in today's world is usually the fourth, but I have been told that before Reiki-ho began to move out of Japan in the late 1930s there were many more levels to be completed before one was considered to be a teacher. Reiki is not a skill so there are no schools as we think of them in this country, but a Reiki teacher will have a certificate and a lineage going back to Mikao Usui.

It is often heard that once a person has had his or her channel opened to Reiki s/he should devote his or her life to Reiki. Devote does not mean to earn an income from Reiki. Gendai Reiki-ho and Komyo Reiki, the methods I teach most frequently, teach how to make Reiki-ho a way of living in the home or at the job. Reiki can help a person to develop relationships that are more positive. Reiki allowed to flow into the work place can make workdays more enjoyable by helping to remove obstacles and developing productive relationships. Each of the levels I teach, except for the Pre-Shoden for children, includes a minimum of twelve hours of instruction which focuses on self-care practices that bring the mind, body, and spirit into balance and nurture a person's positive natural talents, abilities, and gifts. The path of Reiki helps each individual to develop in a positive way that is best for him or her, a wonderful way of honoring the uniqueness in each of us.

Reiki may sound complicated with so many people introducing so many different things into their practice, but it is not. The wonderment of the universal energy Usui-Sensei named Reiki resonates with life energy, enhancing everything positive one does in their life, and works in harmony with other positive energies. Reiki is a spiritual path we travel for our own growth. It enhances skills, and can bring wealth in many forms. Are there people in the world that have read a book or watched a video, and know the subject well enough to pretend they have had their channel opened? There will always be pretenders in the world, but any person having had their channel opened will have at least one certificate, and easily be able to give their energy and technique lineages back to Usui-Sensei.

The Gokai, or five precepts, or principals, is the backbone of Reiki. The five short lines are five ways to invite happiness in your life now (today), which can touch the past and future in a positive way.

This is the perfect description of the first level or first degree in Usui Reiki Ryoho training. Usui Reiki Ryoho is the name Mikao Usui gave to the vibration of love and harmony of universal energy he connected to in 1921. Today most people shortened the name to Reiki. Take a minute to think of all the energies and strength contained in love, and all those contained in harmony. This will give you an idea of how powerful the combination of these two energies is.

Reiki cannot be directed, but once a person's channel has been opened, Reiki can be allowed to flow to yourself and others. Reiki-ho (method) is often called a hand-on healing, because allowing Reiki to flow is usually done through the palms of the hands. Reiki knows where imbalances exist in the mind, body or spirit and travels to the core. Reiki balances and surrounds with harmony; what is in balance and surrounded by harmony is healed.

Any one of any age and with any lifestyle can benefit from Reiki, and have his or her channel opened to Reiki by a qualified Reiki Shihan (teacher). There is nothing strange or difficult about Reiki. Some ways Reiki has been practiced since the 1980s have cast dark shadows on Reiki, but the wonderment of the essence of pure Usui Reiki Ryoho, called by whatever name a Reiki Shihan (teacher) chooses, always remains.

The first level of Reiki is the first step on the path of self-discovery, reducing stress, and enhancing all positive in your life. It is the first step into a life of health and good fortune. When training in this level immeasurable hours are devoted to self-healing and self-growth. There are no short cuts to self-healing or self-growth. To identify with an energy most people cannot see, hear, taste, or smell requires hours of study with a qualified Reiki Shihan, and practice. The five short lines of the Gokai (the five precept or five principles) is the backbone of Reiki-ho showing the path to happiness. The five lines are short in word length, but the meaning behind each line is powerful.

Reiki is easy to learn but requires time and discipline. No level of Reiki can be learned in one afternoon, by a quick download from the internet, or from a book. The first level or entrance to Reiki requires at least 12 hours of interactive instruction with a Reiki Shihan. Your communication skills whether they are verbal or in sign, as with your independent mobility skills, took time to learn. So why should the ability to channel two of the strongest vibrations from the universe be any different. The ritual of opening another person's channel to Reiki takes only a few minutes, but the width and clearness of that channel is another matter. Think of all the practice and time put into learning to walk upright even if all systems within the body are functioning perfectly. Then think of the connection to Reiki as the most complex of professional ballet routines. Can you imagine any person learning to not only walk upright but also achieve the grace of a professional ballerina or danseur in 1 afternoon, 1 weekend, or one month? The strength of Reiki is such that it needs nothing to increase its strength, and once a clear connection has been established Reiki can be combined with everything positive in your life. The last student of Chujiro Hayashi-Sensei is a good example of the time required between the entrance to Reiki and the teaching of Reiki. Hawayo Takata-Sensei, who appears in many energy lineages in North America, reached the level allowing her to teach Reiki in Hawaii in 1938 only after countless months of daily interaction, daily study, and daily practice. At least thirty years passed before she began teaching Reiki-ho.

The universe does not discriminate, so not race, religion, sex, formal education, or wealth will allow anyone to condense the time required for Reiki. I have experienced since 1997 that there is no way of knowing the limit to which your channel has been opened until it has opened wider. During a Reiki Conference I attend with eighty other Reiki master/teachers from around the world, it was clear we were all continuing to search for more knowledge and self-growth. Mikao Usui invited his students to try to achieve going beyond what he had achieved, showing that to let go of thinking you have all the knowledge is important step in achieving a pure connection to Reiki. Each of the overwhelming number of energies within the vibration named Reiki has a unique beauty of its own, and therefore the wonderment of experiencing never stops. Reiki (universal energy) and Qi (life force energy) blending within some people can delight the senses of another person to whom the blend flows. Reiki and Qi are not the same energy, but Reiki reinforces and replenishes Qi when needed. Energy can be neither created nor destroyed, but it can change into many forms.

Hiroshi Doi one of my teachers and a member of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, the original society began by Mikao Usui, shared much insight with me and other students. The Gakkai believes no person since Mikao Usui has obtained the perfect connection that he had achieved. Considering the devotion to Mikao Usui's teachings that the Gakkai has maintained in the spiritual practice of Reiki, I have no reason to doubt any information that actually has come from the Gakkai. Members of the Gakkai share what they have learned through various means, with each other. Because of the way in which Mikao Usui taught, he did not share the wealth of his entire knowledge with any one student. To know the full extent of Mikao Usui's knowledge and its sources, not only would the three people he raised to the highest level have to be interviewed, but also his other 1,997 known students, and Mikao Usui. The next time you read about secrets being under covered about any universal energy ask how much time and research went into that claim. There has been much created history about Reiki, which is proof that humans have been blessed with great imaginations. Fables have always been a wonderful way to make a point to another person. Once you have learned to walk, the ability never leaves you unless your body is damaged. Once your channel has been opened to Reiki the connection remains with you always. How clear the channel remains depends upon practice and a clear mind. Attempts to direct Reiki can put blocks within the channel.

Hundreds of what are called symbols, or training wheels, have been created since Mikao Usui's passing in 1926. Symbols have no power; they are used only to help some to identify with the overwhelming number of energies contained in Reiki. There is no symbol that is the magic key to open what Mikao Usui opened only after his first awakening followed by three years of Zen studies, followed by days of meditation, hours of unconsciousness, and then practice combined with drawing upon all the wealth of the life experiences he had accumulated. Mikao Usui never received a doctorate of any kind, and did not go searching to find Reiki. We know he was an extremely intelligent and caring man that had been searching for knowledge all his life. He was a husband, father, and there were times in his life he was, as the saying goes, down on his luck.

As you advance through the four or more levels of Reiki you will learn to let balance and harmony flow to others, but keeping yourself in balance automatically touches all you meet in a positive way. Have you ever been around a person that simply made you feel great even if he or she was not giving you compliments or gifts?

The second level will take you deeper into Reiki as you learn how it can travel over time and distance, but each level of Reiki is honorable. Most Reiki teachers use symbols in the second level to help students learn to feel the energies. They are used again in the spiritual third level, and in the fourth level you learn how to leave the symbols and continue on your journey without their weight.
